For NAIOP Minnesota’s Cocktail Confessions we track down industry movers and shakers, sometimes bribe them with cocktails and get their take on the topics of the day. In this installment, we feature Michael Langley, CEO of GREATER MSP.

Questions you’d like to see asked? Leave them in the comments section below.

What advice have you been given that has proven most valuable in your career?
The best advice? Take the road less traveled. Don’t always take the jobs or tasks that are the easiest or most visible within a company or organization. I have found that taking on the tough assignment and jobs with bigger challenges makes a person stronger and provides them with the experience and wisdom to make better decisions and appreciate their successes even more.

What habits have you formed that keep you energized and on top of your game?
A couple of things. First, the old adage “Early to bed and early to rise…” has proven to be very beneficial. I generally get more done from 5:00 – 9:00 am than most of the remainder of the day. Second, and the habit that I wish were much more consistent with, is the opportunity to ride my bicycle on regular training runs around the Grand Rounds.  A great time to think and focus!

Finally, getting involved in a worthy community issue is very energizing and rewarding personally and professionally. A couple of areas that are important to me is my work on the board of the Metro State University Foundation, focusing on scholarships for students who are working to make a better life for themselves and their families, and serving on the Minnesota Orchestra board to help maintain and grow our appreciation for music and the arts in our region.

Now that he Vikings season has ended, what winter activities will you participate in?
I love to snowshoe here at home, and still sneak away for golf when possible. Go Vikings!  All the way to the Super Bowl next year.

In fact, in February 2018, we will have the chance to combine our love for winter sports and the Vikings, when Super Bowl LII is played here at US Bank Stadium and we turn the region into a Winter Wonderland!!!

The Confession:  What choice of refreshment will you have at your next happy hour?
At happy hour, it will likely be Makers Mark on the rocks (with lots of rocks).
After happy hour, it will definitely be a Red Bordeaux Blend with dinner.
