Mindy Rietz headshotOn a blustery, February morning, I sat down with Mindy Rietz, associate at CBRE and vice chair of NAIOP Minnesota’s Developing Leaders Committee.  If you don’t know Mindy, she’s fast-paced, bright, curious, and what I would call spunky.  She’s a mover and shaker with a can-do attitude.

Question: Mindy, where are you from?

Mindy: I’m a transplant. I grew up in Iowa and moved to Minneapolis about seven years ago.

Q: So, did you grow up on a farm?

M: No, (she laughs) everyone asks me that.  I grew up in Davenport, where Joe Mauer played rookie ball for the Quad City River Bandits.

Q: Were you involved in any activities growing up?

M: I was really active in high school.  I played four sports: volleyball, soccer, track and competitive cheerleading. Balancing schoolwork and athletics taught me time management skills.

Q: Tell me about your role as the vice chair of the Developing Leaders (DL) Committee.

Real Estate Recess

M: Working in conjunction with the current chair Shawn Smith, I help coordinate DL activities and networking events, run the monthly meeting and develop the overarching strategy for the committee. The DL committee has sub-committees that we also oversee: the Mentorship Program, the DL Educational Mini-Series and my personal favorite, Real Estate Recess.

Q:  Why did you decide to get involved with NAIOP?

M: In the past, I’ve been involved in many other great industry organizations but I gravitated to NAIOP.  NAIOP is all about building connections and networking.  I’ve been able to learn from some of the best. It’s an incredibly diverse group of people working in all facets of real estate.   What I find to be so valuable about the DL group is that it functions as a peer-mentorship group of like-minded individuals.  We are all in similar spots in our careers, growing together in our fields and wanting to help each other succeed.

Mindy - CEC Camp Fire GalaQ: What is your role at CBRE?

M: I’m currently working in the Investment Properties Group as an associate, representing private clients in the disposition and acquisition of office, industrial and retail properties. My job is challenging, fun, rewarding and every day is different.  Starting out in accounting and brokerage, I understand how each piece of the process fits together, which allows me to better service my clients.

Q: Mentorship is a central pillar to the DL Committee.  Do you have a mentor?

M: I have several mentors. Tom Holtz has been a great friend and mentor for the last four years. He has taught me a lot over the years, not just about real estate, but relationships and family as well. Tom went to the University of Minnesota and I went to the University of Iowa. This rivalry has been a fun way for us to connect whenever the teams are playing each other. Tom will say, “Hey, the Gophers are going to beat those Hawkeyes, looks like lunch is on you this time.” Mark Reiling, Tanya Bell, Marcia Lockman and my business partners, Jim Leary and Steve Lysen, are also mentors of mine.

Q: What’s next for Mindy?  You are set to chair the DL Committee next year but I’m sure you have more coming around the bend.

M: In the fall, I’m testing for my CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member).  I also volunteer with NAIOP’s Community Enhancement Committee as well as the CCIM Programs Committee.
