Here we are in the next installment of Cocktail Confessions where we track down industry movers and shakers, sometimes bribe them with cocktails and get their take on the topics of the day. In this installment, we feature Tom Hotovec of Meritex.

Questions you’d like to see asked? Leave them in the comments section below.

As our industry has picked up from a dismal few years, is there one lesson that you can share that has proven most valuable in your career?
As for my career, I’ve consistently tried to put myself in environments that provide opportunities. I’ve been willing to work hard and continually strive to improve myself and gain new skills.

As for what I do at Meritex, it helps to develop and implement a disciplined strategy that enables you to be competitive in all environments. Specifically, look ahead and make sure that you develop the resources that you will need when times are tough.

What habits have you formed that keep you energized and on top of your game?
I’m an early riser so I try to get a little exercise and eat healthy every day. I then revisit my top three or four projects every morning to get focused before the day starts.  Developing a healthy work/life balance is another goal that I’ve improved upon but is always a juggling act.

What pastime do you enjoy during the summer months?
If I had a ‘free day’ I’d probably be found at the lake trying to land another Musky, but lake time often involves dragging kids on a tube and relaxing with friends!

The Confession:  What choice of refreshment will you have at your next happy hour?
I have a diverse palate, but if it was at the end of a long day of Musky fishing, I’d take a martini – Bombay up with olives please!
