Project Profile | Washburn Center for Children

Washburn Center for ChildrenA local nonprofit dedicated to helping children with social, emotional and behavioral problems, the Washburn Center for Children grew out of its space and could not accommodate the growing need for its services. In 2011, the agency launched a $24.5 million capital campaign to build a new facility.

Cresa Minneapolis was engaged to provide development management services, including site selection, project and relocation management services, as well as assistance in structuring project financing. The project required extensive work with the state, county, city and surrounding neighborhoods. The site location – at Glenwood and Dupont Avenues in Minneapolis – faced significant site challenges including environmental contamination and poor soils requiring piling.

All the work came together in August Washburn Center for Children2013 when the team broke ground on a new 55,000 sq. ft. facility on 2.5 acres in the Heritage Park neighborhood of Minneapolis. The facility is due for completion in November 2014. Project partners include DLR Group in association with Lawal Scott Erickson Architects, Mortenson Construction, Target Commercial Interiors, Braun Intertec and Peer Engineering.

Washburn’s plans for a child-centered facility integrate natural elements to create a multi-faceted healing environment. Richard Louv, author of seven books about the connections between family, nature and community, is consulting on the design of the new building. Designed and constructed to be eligible for LEED certification, the new facility will have minimal impact on the environment and offer both children and staff a healthy environment.
