Recap | Rookies & Rock Stars

SONY DSCThe Developing Leaders Committee revamped their premier event for 2012, and the new event, Rookies & Rock Stars, was held in early November at The Guthrie’s Endless Bridge with great success.  R&R was an upscale networking event featuring past Dinner with a Winner icons and current NAIOP Minnesota board members as “Rock Stars” and Developing Leaders as “Rookies.” Over 20 Rock Stars attended, providing the 40 DLs in attendance with unmatched networking possibilities. The Developing Leaders Committee is very excited about the turnout and excellent feedback received from attendees. The event raised over $1,000 for our chapter’s charity partner, Catalyst Community Partners.

How you can help the North Minneapolis recovery effort

An update from NAIOP Minnesota’s charitable partner, Catalyst Community Partners

Catalyst’s recovery work
Catalyst is leading the commercial property recovery efforts and is hosting 2 emergency one-stop shop assistance sessions for all commercial property owners and businesses impacted by Sunday’s tornado with 8 other collaborating agencies and the City of Minneapolis. Up to 50 businesses may have been impacted. Catalyst will organize donations of services, volunteers, building materials, etc. needed to get the commercial properties and their small business tenants operational again.  If your organization can assist in these recovery projects in the coming months, please contact Catalyst President Sue Wollan Fan at (612) 877-4004 or sue@catalystcommunitypartners.org

What you can do
Send a check of any amount to Catalyst Tornado Recovery Fund, 3033 Excelsior Boulevard, Minneapolis MN 55416 or donate online (designate “Tornado Recovery Fund” in the comments area).  Catalyst will use these funds to assist commercial property owners and small businesses in their recovery. You can also give online to the general Tornado Recovery fund administered by the Minneapolis Foundation – click here.

Neighborhood update
All Catalyst properties withstood the storm with minimal damage. Catalyst’s newly renovated 5 Points building located at the “ground zero” intersection of Penn & West Broadway had only a few tears in the roof membrane from flying debris.  Surrounding buildings did not fare as well.  Many had their facades and roofs ripped off; some were flattened.

Since Monday, Catalyst and KMOJ-FM radio have been operating an emergency resources center at 5 Points where hundreds of residents have given and received food, water, blankets and immediate family needs. The 5 Points outdoor plaza has become a central gathering spot for volunteers, organizers and residents needing assistance.  From its 2nd level offices, KMOJ-FM broadcasted for 53 hours straight without electrical power, providing public announcements and updates via a small generator. Full story

Nate Dogs, a Kindred Kitchen member-business, served 500 free hot dogs at an impromptu community BBQ on Monday night in the Cub Store parking lot for 400 tornado victims. Food trucks throughout the metro area joined in the event. Full story

Upcoming NAIOP fall community enhancement project in North Minneapolis-September 17th!

On Friday, September 17th, NAIOP members are asked to help Catalyst Community Partners and their northside partners in beautifying a neighborhood in North Minneapolis.  Glen Gale Park, located at 2448 Ilion Avenue North, Minneapolis, and 45 of its surrounding homes, are in dire need of beautification.  What is so great about this project, is that each of the homeowners will be working along side of the volunteers!  What a great way to meet the people in North Minneapolis!

The day will begin bright and early at 7:00 am and we will be working until 6:00 pm.  You may come for a portion of the day if that suits your schedule.

We will be putting in gardens, pulling weeds, picking up garbage, mowing, painting houses, doing trim work, etc.  Dress for weather but you are encouraged to bring your own work gloves, wear appropriate footwear (no sandals) and anything else that makes it comfortable to do outside work.  We work rain or shine.  Last year, our best day of work was in soaking rain and everyone loved it.

Food, beverages, materials and supplies will be furnished with the help of RJM Construction.

Please RSVP to joni@catalystcommunitypartners.org or call 763-656-8810.

Tilt the Kilt

The Community Enhancement Committee held their first ever “Tilt the Kilt,” a lawn bowling event at Brit’s Pub in Downtown Minneapolis, on August 16. The proceeds from the event went to NAIOP’s current charity partner, Catalyst Community Partners. The work Catalyst does in fixing up buildings along West Broadway resonates with the members of NAIOP.  Community Enhancement Co-Chair Sonja Breyfogle explains, “I’m really happy that NAIOP chose a charitable partner with similar goals, there’s a commonality with real estate that we both have. We haven’t had that before.”

Twenty-four teams of four showed up with clever names and even more clever costumes for the lawn bowling event, which was held on a beautiful summer day in the middle of a very hot and humid August. Raffles were held for prizes, with all proceeds going to Catalyst Community Partners. Prizes were also given for most creative team name and most creative costumes.
Thank you to Sonja, her Co-Chair Julie Yeazle, and the rest of the committee for making this inaugural event such a success!
