Recap | Developing Leaders Mentor Program Kick-Off Event
The NAIOP Developing Leaders 2013 Mentor Program is off to another good start with approximately 45 of the 58 participants in the program attending the kick-off event on February 7th at Mozza Mia. Amy Ciani opened the evening with a lively address to everyone in attendance, outlining expectations and planned events throughout the year including multiple roundtable discussions, joint attendance at NAIOP breakfast program events, and a year-end appreciation party. The mentor program has been incredibly successful matching up prominent figures from many of the major industry players in town with NAIOP’s Developing Leaders. Based on the enthusiasm shown at the kick-off event, the 2013 program will definitely continue to build on past successes.
The mentor program subcommittee consists of Amy Ciani, Boston Weir, and Mike Fitzpatrick. Please contact Mike, Amy, or Boston if you have any questions or would like to get more involved.
NAIOP Minnesota Launching its 2013 Developing Leaders Mentor Program
Today is the kick-off event for the Developing Leaders Mentor Program at Mozza Mia at 50th and France in Edina. 58 NAIOP members will participate in this year’s program. Other events this year will include multiple round table discussions throughout the year, joint attendance at NAIOP breakfast program events, and a year-end appreciation party.
The mentor program has been incredibly successful in the past. It matches up leaders from many of the major industry players in town with members of the NAIOP Minnesota Developing Leaders committee. The Developing Leaders that participate in this program are given the unique opportunity to have a one-on-one relationship with real estate executives, developers, and many other individuals that provide them with invaluable knowledge and experience. It is open to all Developing Leaders and is well worth the nominal fee.
Know Your Committees: Developing Leaders
In an attempt to increase participation and knowledge of NAIOP Minnesota’s committees, the Communications Committee is starting a series called Know Your Committees. Our inaugural committee spotlight features the Developing Leaders Committee.
What: The Developing Leaders Committee is a committee designed for young professionals aged 35 and younger.
Where/When: The committee currently meets over lunch on the second Wednesday of the month at the NAIOP Minnesota Office (4248 Park Glen Road in St. Louis Park), but the location may change. Contact Ben Bastian (see below) for updated information.
Why: The Developing Leaders Committee provides an excellent chance for young professionals to become involved and undertake leadership roles in NAIOP. The committee programs and activities provide its members access to decision makers and leaders of many of the Twin Cities’ leading real estate companies, access that would normally be unavailable to most young professionals. Committee members also have the opportunity to participate in the mentorship program, through which many of the industry’s key players are teamed up with Developing Leaders to answer questions that the mentee may have, provide leadership and assistance, and potentially more. Recap | Rookies & Rock Stars
The Developing Leaders Committee revamped their premier event for 2012, and the new event, Rookies & Rock Stars, was held in early November at The Guthrie’s Endless Bridge with great success. R&R was an upscale networking event featuring past Dinner with a Winner icons and current NAIOP Minnesota board members as “Rock Stars” and Developing Leaders as “Rookies.” Over 20 Rock Stars attended, providing the 40 DLs in attendance with unmatched networking possibilities. The Developing Leaders Committee is very excited about the turnout and excellent feedback received from attendees. The event raised over $1,000 for our chapter’s charity partner, Catalyst Community Partners.

Developing Leaders Discuss Minnesota’s Legislative Agenda with David Olson
By Ben Fazendin, Grandbridge Real Estate Capital LLC
At a recent NAIOP Developing Leader Public Policy event David Olson, president of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, spoke about the realistic economic challenges facing Minnesota. The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce has an exceptional grasp of the issues facing Minnesota businesses, as they represent over 2,300 Minnesota companies, 135 local chambers and 65 business trade associations at the Minnesota Legislature on a variety of economic issues. Before 25 Developing Leaders and NAIOP board members, Mr. Olson discussed issues such as health care reform, environmental permitting reform and education reform in the context of the State’s budgetary limitations. One example of the pressures facing the state is demonstrated by health care spending; health care costs have risen 8.5% annually while tax revenue has risen only 3.9% annually. (more…)

DL Politics and Parfaits event unlocked secrets to legislative involvement for career success
By Katie Kieffer, DL Committee Chair
Politics isn’t just for geeks and political junkies – it’s for normal people who want to have a say in the issues that impact them and their customers. Politicians are particularly tuned in to young people, and there are multiple tools that make it easy for DLs to contact their elected officials. These are a few of the lessons the DLs learned during our inaugural DL Politics and Parfaits breakfast panel featuring:
Jean Kane: President and Chief Operating Officer of Welsh Companies. Jean is a Past President of NAIOP Minnesota and currently serves as the Vice Chair of Government Affairs for NAIOP Corporate.
Pat Mascia: Senior Vice President for Duke Realty. Pat is NAIOP Minnesota’s 2009 Public Policy Committee Chair.
Julie Perrus: Associate with the law firm of Larkin Hoffman Daly & Lindgren. She is a member of the firm’s Government Relations and Land Use & Real Estate practice groups. She is Co-Chair of the Advocacy Committee of the U.S. Green Building Council Mississippi Headwaters Chapter and provides pro bono lobbying services to the organization. (more…)
